Meldonium may be used to treat coronary artery disease.These heart problems may sometimes lead to ischemia, a condition where too little blood flows to the organs in the body, especially the heart. Because this drug is thought to expand the arteries, it helps to increase the blood flow as well as increase the flow of oxygen throughout the body. Meldonium has also been found to induce anticonvulsant and antihypnotic effects involving alpha 2-adrenergic receptors as well as nitric oxide-dependent mechanisms. This, in summary, shows that meldonium given in acute doses could be beneficial for the treatment of seizures and alcohol intoxication. It may also have some effect on decreasing the severity of withdrawal symptoms caused by the cessation of chronic alcohol use.

Sol mildronate 500 mg. To a warm water bath containing 1.5 L of acetonitrile, add a solution 500 mg. of sodium carbonate in 10 cc. of water. Let stand at 4 C. for 30 minutes. Then add one-half volume of water to each 1.5 cc. of acetonitrile. Add a solution 500 mg. of sodium perchlorate in a solution of 500 ml. water, and stir in gently. 1 cc. of chilled toluene. After 30 minutes stir in 3 cc. dry ethyl ether and a solution of 200 mg. aqueous sodium thiosulfate. Keep covered, the stirrer running, and at 1 hour add one-half volume of ice cold deionized water to the solution of sodium sulfate (with one-half volume of water). After 30 minutes add one-half volume of deionized water to the sodium sulfate solution, and stir in. After 2 hours add one-half volume of deionized water to the solution of aqueous sodium perchlorate. After 30 min. add one-half volume of water to each 1.5 cc. of acetonitrile solution.
